SPECIFIC TYPES OF WORK

Applicable Age

Permitted Employment for Teens

Under 14 and 
14 - 17 years old
  • On a family farm or ranch
  • Work for their parents or guardians, except in hazardous occupations, such as mining or manufacturing
  • Casual, community non-revenue raising, uncompensated activities
  • As an actor, model or performer
  • On casual chores for homeowner
  • as a legislative aide
  • Selling magazines and newspapers
  • As an official or referee for a non-profit organization (under 14 may not officiate at adult events or activities
14 - 17       
years old
  • Deliver magazines and newspapers
  • Office and clerical work, selling, advertising, art work, price marking, packing, shelving, window trimming and comparative shopping
  • Work as a cashier, waiting on tables, bussing tables, washing dishes, prepare and serve food and beverages (but may not use motorized equipment such as meat slicing machines). Cooking is limited to snack bars, soda soda fountains and cafeteria service counters
  • May use such kitchen appliances as a dishwasher, toaster, popcorn-popper, milkshake blender, coffee grinder, etc.
  • Bag and carry out customers' orders
  • Work in a gas station pumping as, checking oil and washing cars. Run errands and make deliveries on foot, bicycle or by public transportation
  • Clean up work, including using vacuums and floor waxers and grounds maintenance.
16 - 17 
years old
  • Work in manufacturing, except brick, tile, explosives or other hazardous occupations
  • Construction work, except using large saws, shears, large motorized equipment
  • Retail sales
  • Food service work, except using bakery appliances
  • Warehousing work
  • May drive a motor vehicle not exceeding 6,000 pounds gvw during daylight hours for incidental and occasional driving only

Under 14
  • May work for family or non-profit organizations, as noted above, outside school hours
Hours:
14 - 15       
years old
May work outside school hours within these limits:
  • Limited to no more than 3 hours on a school day
  • 18 hours in a school week
  • 8 hours on a non-school day
  • A total of 40 hours in a non-school week
  • May not work before 7 a.m. or after 7 p.m. during school year
  • May work until 9 p.m. outside school year
